Biocontrol

Approved and pipeline biological control agents for Hawaiian invasive species. Historical releases included.

  • 01
    Miconia leaf blight fungus
Fungal pathogen causing leaf necrosis. Reduces photosynthetic capacity and seed production. Does not kill mature plants outright but contributes to stand decline and reduces seed pressure on uninvaded areas.

  • 02
    Clidemia thrips
Thrips that feed on growing tips of Clidemia, suppressing flower and fruit production. One of the oldest biocontrol successes in Hawaiian ecosystems, though efficacy varies by site.

  • 03
    Erythrina gall wasp parasitoid
Parasitoid released to control the invasive Erythrina gall wasp (Quadrastichus erythrinae) which devastated wiliwili populations in the mid-2000s. Has enabled partial recovery of wiliwili.

  • 04
    Strawberry guava scale
Scale insect that reduces strawberry guava growth and fruit production through galling of leaves. Release was delayed nearly 2 decades due to cultural and public concern over waiawī uses.

  • 05
Rapid Ohia Death — no approved biocontrol
No approved biocontrol exists for ROD pathogens. Research ongoing into trichoderma soil amendments and resistant genotype propagation. This entry exists to document the absence and track research status.

  • 06
    Miconia leaf blight fungus
Host-specific fungal pathogen causing leaf necrosis on miconia. Reduces reproductive output rather than killing mature plants outright.
