Miconia — cut stump with triclopyr

Type
chemical
Habitats
wet forest, mesic forest
Cost
Moderate — herbicide cost ~$50/acre; labor is the major driver.

Summary

Standard treatment for mature miconia individuals too large for hand-pull. Cut-stump application of triclopyr herbicide directly to the cambium within minutes of cutting prevents resprouting.

Protocol

1. Cut stem as close to ground as practical (< 10 cm stump height). 2. Within 5 minutes, apply 20% Garlon 4 Ultra in crop oil or bark oil directly to the entire cut surface. 3. Paint or squirt-bottle application, ensure full coverage of cambium. 4. Do not cut in rain or where runoff may reach surface water. 5. Tag treated stem with flagging and GPS point for follow-up.

Safety

Triclopyr is a restricted-use pesticide in some contexts. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, long sleeves, and eye protection. Do not apply near surface water.

Efficacy

High efficacy when applied within 5 minutes of cutting. Resprouting below 10% in well-executed treatments.
