Strawberry guava — basal bark herbicide
- Type
- chemical
- Habitats
- mesic forest, wet forest
- Cost
- Moderate. Herbicide ~$80/gallon diluted; rate depends on infestation density.
Summary
For stems 2–15 cm diameter, basal bark application is less labor-intensive than cut-stump and avoids the need to cut each stem. Works year-round on non-senescent trees.
Protocol
1. Apply herbicide to lower 30 cm of bark completely around stem.
2. Wet but do not puddle; application rate ~10–15 mL per stem.
3. Treat during dry weather; 8+ hours without rain required.
4. Allow 6+ months for full efficacy; dead standing trees fall progressively.
Safety
PPE per herbicide label. Avoid spray drift onto desirable adjacent species.
Efficacy
High for stems under 15 cm; reduced efficacy on thicker bark without pre-scoring.
