ʻAʻaliʻi direct seeding for dryland restoration

Type
cultural
Habitats
dry forest, subalpine
Cost
Low in materials; moderate in labor if fencing required.

Summary

Direct-seeding of Dodonaea viscosa into prepared plots. Cost-effective alternative to nursery outplanting for large-scale dryland restoration.

Protocol

1. Collect seed from local populations in fruit (brown capsules). 2. Scarify lightly or soak 12h to break dormancy. 3. Broadcast at 20–40 seeds per m² onto raked or lightly scarified soil. 4. Cover lightly with soil or litter. 5. Time with first significant rain event of wet season. 6. Fence or otherwise protect from ungulates for minimum 24 months.

Safety

Seed collection permission required on state/federal land. Heat and UV exposure on dryland sites — sunrise-only work during summer.

Efficacy

Variable — success depends on rainfall pattern in year of seeding. Multi-year seeding recommended.
